Most couples start with a name. It works better to start with a style. Quiet documentary, bright editorial colour, film grain and polished classical album work are different products and a well-reviewed photographer whose look does not match your day is still the wrong booking. Look at full galleries, not just the highlight reel.

The nine photographers here show how different that can be. Dan Evans Photography leans into vintage warmth and a quiet documentary approach. Mitcha Photography & Film in Hyde Park uses grainy film and black-and-white texture as design choices. Solemate Studios offers a Super 8 film option alongside photo and video. B Captured by Ky Luu has ABIA SA wins across 2012 to 2018 and a polished classical style and James Field Photography was named Best Wedding Photographer at the 18th SA ABIA awards. Pick the style before you pick the name

Wedding photography splits into a few clear styles. The most common mistake is booking a well-reviewed shooter whose style does not match the wedding you are actually having. Bright editorial colour, quiet documentary, film-look grain and polished classical album work are genuinely different products. Look at two or three full galleries from each photographer, not just their highlight reel. Decide which one you want to live with for the next forty years.

Match the style to the venue and the mood. A grainy film aesthetic suits a relaxed Hills vineyard, a polished classical approach suits a traditional ceremony at a heritage estate. Bright candid coverage suits an energetic city party. The right photographer for someone else's wedding is often the wrong one for yours.

What the price actually buys

Adelaide pricing runs in clear bands. Entry-level short-coverage work starts around $2,500, mid-range full-day coverage sits near $4,000 to $6,500. Top-end documentary shooters with album and engagement add-ons run $7,500 to $12,000. Anything under about $2,000 usually means a beginner with limited backup gear or a part-timer, which can be fine if you know that going in.

Read what is inside the package, not just the price. Hours of coverage, whether a second shooter is included or an add-on, album, engagement shoot and gallery turnaround all move the real number. Two quotes at the same price can be very different products once you line up the inclusions.

The questions that separate a pro from a risk

Ask about redundancy first. Does the photographer shoot on two cameras, carry backup bodies and use dual memory cards. A wedding cannot be reshot, so gear redundancy is not a nice-to-have. A professional answers this without hesitation.

Then ask about the second shooter, the plan if they fall ill and the gallery turnaround. A second shooter doubles candid coverage and is close to essential above 100 guests. Industry-standard turnaround is six to twelve weeks for the full gallery, with sneak-peek images inside a week. A vague timeline or no illness contingency is worth pushing on before you sign.

Booking timing

Adelaide's strongest photographers book out 12 to 18 months ahead for Saturday weddings between October and April. Off-season and weekday weddings usually have six to nine months of runway. A good rule is to lock the photographer the day after you confirm the venue, because the best shooters go first.

Smaller-volume photographers, the ones who deliberately shoot fewer weddings a year, fill their calendars earliest. If your shortlist includes one of them, treat their availability as the constraint and plan around it.
