How this list works

Position #1 is the featured slot, a paid placement that is openly labelled in the entry itself. Featured businesses still have to clear our published editorial bar to be on the list at all. Paying does not bypass quality. All other positions are editorial selections presented in no particular order, these are recommendations rather than a strict ranking. We re-walk every list every six months.

Start with My Aged Care, it is free and it is the gate

Before any subsidised aged care can begin, there is a free government assessment, and it is the right first call rather than ringing around facilities. Phone My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. A qualified team works out whether your parent needs home care, respite or residential care, and what level of subsidy applies.

This step is required, not optional, for subsidised services, so doing it early saves weeks later. It also gives you an honest read on the level of care actually needed, which is often different from what the family assumed.

Look at home care before residential

Residential care is not always the next step. Home Care Packages, graded Levels 1 to 4, fund in-home support that can keep someone in their own home for months or years longer, which is what most people want. The eligibility runs through the same My Aged Care process.

Several providers on this list offer both home care and residential care. Choosing one of those early can make the eventual transition far smoother, because the provider already knows your parent when their needs change.

Read the Star Ratings, and know what they cover

Since 2022 the Australian Government publishes a Star Rating for every residential aged care home, covering compliance, quality measures, residents' experience and staffing levels. Three stars or higher is the threshold used for this list. You can check current ratings at health.gov.au or on the My Aged Care site.

Treat the rating as a filter, not a verdict. It tells you which homes clear the bar, but it cannot tell you how a place will feel for your particular parent, which is why the next point matters most.

Understand the real cost, and always visit in person

Residential care typically involves a Refundable Accommodation Deposit somewhere between $300,000 and $650,000, which is refunded when the resident leaves, plus a Basic Daily Fee of around $63 a day in 2026, plus means-tested care contributions. Premium rooms cost more. Always ask for a written cost summary so there are no surprises.

And visit. No rating, review or brochure replaces walking the home, meeting the staff and seeing a meal served. Aged care is one of the most consequential decisions a family makes, so see it with your own eyes before you sign anything.

Frequently asked

How do I start the aged-care assessment process?+

Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. The assessment is free and conducted by a qualified team. They will determine whether your parent needs home care, respite care or residential care and what level of subsidy applies. The assessment is required before any subsidised service can begin.

What do the Star Ratings mean?+

Since 2022, the Australian Government publishes Star Ratings for residential aged care homes covering compliance, quality measures, residents' experience and staffing. Three stars or higher is the threshold we use for inclusion. Find current ratings at health.gov.au or the My Aged Care website.

How much does residential aged care cost?+

Most rooms involve a Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) of $300,000-650,000 (refundable when the resident leaves), plus a Basic Daily Fee (~85% of the age pension, around $63/day in 2026), plus means-tested care contributions. Premium rooms with views or private bathrooms cost more. Always request a written cost summary.

Should I look at home care before residential care?+

Often yes. Home Care Packages (Levels 1-4) provide subsidised in-home support that can delay residential care by months or years. The full eligibility process runs through My Aged Care. Many of the providers on this list offer both home care and residential care, simplifying the eventual transition.
