The Best Aged Care and Retirement Villages in Adelaide

Choosing aged care usually starts with a phone call about someone you love. It tends to arrive faster than anyone planned. In Adelaide the picks below run from North Adelaide and Goodwood to Rosewater and North Plympton, so the first practical question is often distance. A home your family can reach easily is a home you will visit more.

Before you ring any provider, call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. The Australian Government runs the application and assessment process. An assessment organisation contacts you to arrange a time. The assessor normally comes to the home. A family member or friend can sit in. Starting there means you know which kind of care is being sought before you compare places.

Two official tools are worth opening alongside this list. The Department of Health publishes a Star Rating for residential aged care homes, shown overall and across four sub-categories: Residents' Experience, Compliance, Staffing and Quality Measures. Fees are the other half. The My Aged Care site sets out the basic daily fee and the accommodation payment options (a refundable lump sum or non-refundable daily payments). It notes that new fee arrangements started on 1 November 2025. Check the current figures there and ask any provider for a written cost summary.

Here is how this list was put together. Each provider needed current accreditation with the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission and a Star Rating of three or higher where rated. The Google rating had to be 3.8 or higher. Pricing had to be published openly. Independent industry guides had to agree. A rating gets a home onto the list. It cannot tell you how a place will feel for your parent, so plan a visit to any you shortlist. The six providers follow.

Start with My Aged Care, it is free and it is the gate

Before any subsidised aged care can begin, there is a free government assessment. It is the right first call rather than ringing around facilities. Phone My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. A qualified team works out whether your parent needs home care, respite or residential care and what level of subsidy applies.

This step is required, not optional, for subsidised services, so doing it early saves weeks later. It also gives you an honest read on the level of care actually needed, which is often different from what the family assumed.

Look at home care before residential

Residential care is not always the next step. Government-funded in-home support can keep someone in their own home for months or years longer, which is what most people want. Home care has been changing, so check the current options and eligibility on My Aged Care (myagedcare.gov.au).

Several providers on this list offer both home care and residential care. Choosing one of those early can make the eventual transition far smoother, because the provider already knows your parent when their needs change.

Read the Star Ratings and know what they cover

Since 2022 the Australian Government publishes a Star Rating for every residential aged care home, covering compliance, quality measures, residents' experience and staffing levels. Three stars or higher is the threshold used for this list. You can check current ratings at health.gov.au or on the My Aged Care site.

Treat the rating as a filter, not a verdict. It tells you which homes clear the bar, but it cannot tell you how a place will feel for your particular parent, which is why the next point matters most.

Understand the real cost and always visit in person

Residential aged care fees and accommodation payments changed under the reforms that started on 1 November 2025, so any figure you read elsewhere may be out of date. My Aged Care (myagedcare.gov.au) has the current rules on what you pay. Always ask the provider for a written cost summary so there are no surprises.

And visit. No rating, review or brochure replaces walking the home, meeting the staff and seeing a meal served. Aged care is one of the most consequential decisions a family makes, so see it with your own eyes before you sign anything.
