The first thing to settle with a plumber is whether this is an emergency or a job you can plan. They are different purchases. A burst pipe at 9pm needs whoever can come fastest and you pay a premium for that. A bathroom renovation or a hot water replacement can wait a day or two for a proper quote and the wait usually saves money.

That is why this list notes the areas each plumber actually services. Ken Hall Plumbers has more than 40 years of trading and over 160 employees. Pricing is where plumbers differ most. Level Plumbing advertises a $0 call-out fee across Adelaide and a 12-month guarantee on both parts and labour. Fawcett Plumbing lists fixed upfront pricing rather than hourly plus call-out. Ask any plumber whether the call-out fee is separate from the hourly rate, whether the quote is fixed or an estimate, who actually turns up and how long the work is guaranteed in writing.

Each plumber needed a Google rating of 4.5 or higher from at least 50 reviews, an established trading history in Adelaide and a current licence. Fawcett Plumbing has no Google rating on file and is the one exception. I checked eight of the ten on the Consumer and Business Services register in October 2026 and the other two are being re-checked. One plumber came off the list in that check because its licence showed as cancelled. Whoever you choose, ask for the licence number before work starts and confirm current rates when you call. The picks are below.

Emergency now or a job you can plan

The first question is whether this is an emergency or a planned job, because they are different purchases. A burst pipe, no hot water or a blocked main at 9pm needs whoever can come fastest and works after hours. You pay a call-out premium for it. A bathroom renovation, a hot-water-system replacement or a gas fit-off can wait a day or two for a quote. That wait usually saves you money.

For emergencies, filter this list to plumbers who genuinely offer 24/7 call-outs and service your suburb, then call rather than fill in a form. For planned work, get two or three written quotes. The cheapest is not automatically the best, but three quotes tell you the fair price for the job.

Check the licence before anything else

In South Australia, plumbing and gas work must be done by a licensed contractor. Gas work in particular is not a place to cut corners. Every plumber worth hiring will give you their licence number without hesitation. You can check it against the Consumer and Business Services register. If someone is vague about licensing, that is the end of the conversation.

Licensing matters for more than safety. Unlicensed work can void your home insurance and your warranty. It can hold up a future sale when a building inspection flags it. The few dollars saved are not worth the exposure.

What to ask before they start

Ask four things. Is the call-out fee separate from the hourly rate and what is each? Is the quote fixed or an estimate that can move? Who actually turns up, the named plumber or a subcontractor? And is the work guaranteed, for how long and in writing? A plumber who answers all four plainly is usually the one who runs a tidy job.

For anything involving digging, walls or gas, get the scope in writing before work starts. A one-line text quote is fine for a tap washer. It is not fine for a re-pipe or a hot-water relocation.

Match the plumber to your suburb

Travel time is part of the bill. A plumber based on the other side of the metro area still has to get to you. For smaller jobs that travel can be a real share of the cost. Where it is close, pick someone who genuinely covers your suburb rather than one who treats it as the far edge of their run.
