How this list works

Position #1 is the featured slot, a paid placement that is openly labelled in the entry itself. Featured businesses still have to clear our published editorial bar to be on the list at all. Paying does not bypass quality. All other positions are editorial selections presented in no particular order, these are recommendations rather than a strict ranking. We re-walk every list every six months.

Match the dentist to the work you need

Most of this list is CBD generalists who do preventive care, fillings and crowns well, and for routine dentistry any of them is a sound choice close to work. Where it matters is the bigger jobs. Complex restorative work across several teeth, with implants or multiple crowns, is better with a practice that has prosthodontic depth. A cosmetic project, veneers or Invisalign or a full smile design, is better with a cosmetic-led practice that does it every day.

Picking the wrong type is a common and costly mistake. A cosmetic boutique is overkill for a check-up, and a busy generalist is the wrong room for a structured smile transformation. The entries flag which is which.

What a check-up costs, and how health funds change it

A standard check-up, scale and clean runs roughly $230 to $310 out of pocket at a private clinic. If you have private extras, a preferred-provider clinic for your fund can bring routine visits to little or no gap, which is worth real money if you go twice a year.

The preferred-provider advantage shrinks on bigger work. For crowns, implants and cosmetic cases the fund discount largely disappears, so for those jobs the dentist's skill and your trust in them matter far more than which fund they align with.

Emergencies and after-hours

Most CBD practices handle emergencies during business hours, so if you have a regular dentist, a same-day chip or sudden pain is usually a phone call away. After hours is the gap to plan for.

For severe pain or trauma outside business hours, the SA Dental Service emergency line is 08 8222 8222. It is worth asking your regular dentist what their own after-hours policy is before you actually need it, rather than finding out at 9pm on a Saturday.

If you want cosmetic work, ask the right question

Veneers, whitening and Invisalign are skill-dependent, and the gap between a good result and a regrettable one is the dentist, not the marketing. The single most useful thing you can ask is to see before-and-after photos of the dentist's own patients, not stock images or manufacturer samples.

A cosmetic-focused practice will have a folder of real cases ready to show you. If they cannot or will not, treat that as an answer.

Frequently asked

How much does a dental check-up and clean cost in Adelaide?+

A standard check-up, scale and clean (item codes 011, 114, 121) typically runs $230-310 out of pocket at private clinics. Most major health funds (BUPA, Medibank, HCF) cover this in full or near-full at preferred-provider clinics, if your dentist accepts HICAPS, the upfront cost is materially lower.

Should I choose a dentist based on health-fund preferred-provider status?+

If you have private cover and use the basic services regularly, yes, preferred providers can offer 100% gap-free check-ups under most major funds. For larger work (crowns, implants), the preferred-provider discount usually disappears, so quality and trust matter more than fund alignment.

Do Adelaide CBD dentists handle emergencies?+

Most do during business hours. After-hours, the SA Dental Service runs an emergency line (08 8222 8222) for severe pain or trauma. Confirm with your regular dentist what their after-hours policy is before you need it.

What is the difference between general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry?+

General dentistry covers preventive care, fillings, crowns and restorations. Cosmetic dentistry adds elective work like veneers, teeth whitening, aesthetic bonding. Most CBD practices offer both. If cosmetic work is your priority, ask specifically for before-and-after photos of the dentist's own work, not stock images.
