Anyone who has tried to book a pallet from the Adelaide Hills to the city knows the quote is rarely the whole story. A headline rate turns into a tail-lift fee, a residential fee and a surcharge for being past Mount Barker. This guide covers four South Australian freight companies as a starting point for small and mid-sized businesses.

They cover different jobs. NextGen Freight is based in Lobethal and runs the Hills corridor and Adelaide metro with an online booking and tracking dashboard. Aussiefast Transport Solutions handles vans through to semi-trailers on one account and says it has been operating in South Australia since 1987. Black & White Trucks is a family business operating since 1976, based at Port Adelaide, which suits home and small-business deliveries. DSE Transport has offices in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, which matters if you ship interstate regularly.

General freight or specialised transport

General freight is anything that fits standard pallets and trailers without special handling, which covers most business and ecommerce shipments. Specialised covers refrigerated, dangerous goods, oversized loads, livestock and vehicles. It costs more.

The trap is trying to save by booking general freight for cargo that needs specialised handling. For the right load, a specialised carrier is not an upsell, it is the only correct choice. A good carrier will tell you which you actually need.

Broker or direct to the carrier

For a one-off or a complex shipment, a freight broker compares carriers and finds capacity quickly, which is worth the margin when you are in a hurry. For ongoing weekly or daily volume, going direct to a carrier secures better long-term rates.

Plenty of South Australian businesses run both: a direct relationship for the routine runs and a broker on speed dial for the unexpected one-offs. Match the channel to how regular the freight actually is.

How freight pricing is calculated

Freight is priced on weight or on cubic metres, whichever is greater, which the industry calls dimensional weight. On top of that sits distance and any handling fees: a tail-lift, a residential delivery, an after-hours run.

For anything over about $200, ask for an itemised quote. The line items are where the fees stack up. Seeing them broken out is the only way to compare two carriers fairly rather than on the headline number.

Hills and regional surcharges

Most Adelaide-based carriers cover the Adelaide Hills as standard, but some add a regional surcharge for properties beyond Mount Barker or Strathalbyn. It is a common surprise on a first invoice.

If you are based in or shipping to the outer Hills, ask about regional surcharges before you book. A Hills-based carrier often treats those pickups as local rate rather than regional, which can be the difference on a recurring run.
