That is the situation this guide is written for: people in the Adelaide Hills who want an auto electrician close to home and want to know who they are handing the keys to.

The ARC tick number is the law, confirm it

Anyone who handles refrigerant gas, which means anyone re-gassing a car air conditioner, must be licensed by the Australian Refrigeration Council. The licence carries an AU number that must appear on quotes and invoices. Working without it is illegal and confirming the number takes ten seconds.

This is the one non-negotiable for air conditioning work. A workshop that cannot give you its ARC AU number should not be touching your AC, full stop.

Auto electrician or mechanic

They are different trades. A mechanic handles the mechanical systems, engine, transmission, brakes and suspension. An auto electrician handles the electrical side, the battery, starter, alternator, wiring, ECU, immobilisers and increasingly the electronics in modern hybrids and EVs.

Most modern cars eventually need both. The smoother path is a workshop that has both trades under one roof or a strong working relationship between the two, so a diagnosis does not bounce between two businesses blaming each other.

Service the air con before summer, not during

A car air conditioner needs a service roughly every two years even when it seems fine. Refrigerant slowly leaks, lubricants break down and condensation promotes corrosion inside the system. Catching a small leak early is far cheaper than replacing a corroded compressor later.

Timing matters in the Hills. A local Mount Barker or Bridgewater workshop saves the metro drive. Getting the AC checked in spring avoids the summer rush when city workshop waitlists blow out to weeks just as you need it most.

Caravans, 4WDs and the extras
