The Best Cafes in Glenelg

Six Glenelg cafes worth the trip to the bay, split between the Jetty Road strip, the quieter Broadway end of Glenelg South and one local favourite in Somerton Park. Each entry names something real from the cafe's own menu or listing.

Glenelg gives you two ways to do a cafe morning. You can drift along Jetty Road and take whatever has a table. Or you can pick a place on purpose. This guide is for the second kind of morning. Six cafes made it: three on Jetty Road itself (H&A Coffee House, Massey Espresso Cucina Dolce and Dante's Deli), two on Broadway in Glenelg South (Seafaring Fools and Mockingbird Lounge) and one in Somerton Park, where Good Day sits on Wilton Avenue among houses rather than shopfronts.

None of the six is on the Esplanade. That was not a rule. It is just what happened when I put review depth and published menus ahead of a sea view. Each cafe needed a Google rating of 4.5 or higher from at least 150 reviews, an address in Glenelg, Glenelg North, Glenelg South or Somerton Park and a current listing showing regular trading hours. Dishes, prices and hours come from each cafe's own website or menu where it has one. Ratings were pulled from Google Maps on 10 October 2026.

Timing is where these cafes differ most. Dante's Deli and Good Day both open at 6.30am on weekdays, which suits an early walk. Dante's sandwiches start from 10am though. The counter is mostly takeaway. Mockingbird Lounge runs 10am to 4pm seven days. H&A Coffee House opens 7.30am to 5pm but is closed on Tuesdays, so check the day before you walk down. Mockingbird has four rooms of seating lined with secondhand books for sale and Good Day doubles as a plant and homewares shop, so both reward staying put. Seafaring Fools takes online reservations, which makes it the one to book when you want a proper sit-down brunch. The six are listed below with the dishes and details I could confirm.

Jetty Road or the side streets

Jetty Road is where most visitors end up. Three of our picks are on it. H&A Coffee House, Massey Espresso Cucina Dolce and Dante's Deli all sit on the strip itself. Expect more foot traffic and a quicker turnover of tables.

Walk a few minutes south and the pace changes. Broadway in Glenelg South has Seafaring Fools and Mockingbird Lounge, which feel more like neighbourhood cafes than tourist stops. Somerton Park, further south again, is where Good Day sits among homes rather than shops.

The parking reality

The City of Holdfast Bay describes Glenelg as its main tourism precinct with both paid and free parking. Several off-street car parks run ticket machines 24 hours a day. There are also larger parking complexes at Marina Pier, Colley Terrace and Elizabeth Street. Some side-street spaces offer free parking for set periods. The council's advice is to read the signs because limits vary by street.

The council also says most parking in Brighton, Somerton Park, Hove and Seacliff is free. That makes the Somerton Park and Glenelg South picks easier on a busy summer weekend. If you are heading to Jetty Road, the tram from the city ends at Moseley Square and several buses to the CBD run along Moseley Street.

Beachfront or local

None of these picks is on the Esplanade itself. We weighted review depth and published menus over a sea view, so the cafes that cleared our bar are on Jetty Road or the streets behind it. If you want your coffee on the sand, a takeaway from Dante's Deli or Massey is the easy option.

The local cafes reward a sit-down. Mockingbird Lounge has four rooms of seating lined with secondhand books for sale. Good Day doubles as a plant and homewares shop. Neither is built for a quick turnover, which is the point.

Bringing the dog

Holdfast Bay council rules say dogs must be on a lead in public. On the beach they must be on a lead between 10am and 8pm during daylight saving. In hooded plover breeding areas dogs must be leashed at all times. Those areas are signposted. Dogs can be exercised off-leash in council reserves if they are under effective control.

For the cafe stop, the Google listing for Seafaring Fools marks it as welcoming dogs, with dogs allowed outside. If the dog is coming, ring ahead or grab an outdoor table, since most of these cafes are small inside.
