The Best Tilers in Adelaide

Seven Adelaide tilers covering bathrooms, floors, pools, leaking showers and heritage tessellated work. These are tradespeople who lay tile, not shops that sell it. We also note what each one says about waterproofing and warranty.

A tiler is one of the trades where you only really see the work once it is done. The part that matters most is hidden. In a shower, bathroom or laundry the waterproofing under the tiles does the real work, so before you compare tile samples ask who does the waterproofing and whether you get a written warranty for it.

The seven tilers below cover quite different jobs. East Adelaide Tiling Co in Stepney has done heritage restoration since 1974, including tessellated verandahs and porches. SA Sealing & Tiling in Glynde is worth calling first if a shower is leaking and you want to know whether it can be repaired before paying for a full retile. D&D Tiling and Renovations in Blair Athol lists pool tiling. SNG Tiling and Bathroom Renovations handles a whole bathroom, including demolition and plumbing and electrical fit-off. Adelaide Master Tiling does underfloor heating and large format tile.

Warranties vary a lot. All Areas Tiling says it provides a 7-year warranty on its tiling or renovation work and a 10-year warranty on waterproofing, while others publish nothing, so ask for terms in writing. None of the tilers here publish fixed prices, which is normal because most want a site visit before they quote. Ask for the quote to be split into demolition, preparation, waterproofing and tiling so two quotes can be compared.

To be included a tiler needed a Google rating of 4.6 or higher from at least 10 reviews, tiling as its core trade rather than tile retail and a working website describing its own services. It also needed a currently trading Google listing. Warranty terms and years in business come from each business's own site. Where a tiler publishes a licence number, checking it on the Consumer and Business Services register is still under way. I have not tried to confirm the finer points of licensing rules here, so check anything you rely on with CBS. The seven tilers follow.

Waterproofing matters more than the tiles

Tiles and grout are not waterproof. In a shower, bathroom or laundry the membrane underneath does the work. A failed membrane is what leads to rotting floors and damp walls next door. The Australian Standard for this is AS 3740:2021 Waterproofing of domestic wet areas, which the National Construction Code references for domestic wet areas.

Ask every tiler who does the waterproofing, which membrane they use and whether you get a written certificate for it when the job is done. Some tilers on this list do it themselves and one offers a separate 10-year warranty on waterproofing. If the waterproofer is a different trade, find out who is responsible if the shower leaks.

Licences: what to ask in SA

In South Australia, sa.gov.au says anyone running a business that carries out or organises building work for others needs a building work contractor's licence from Consumer and Business Services, subcontractors included. Some Adelaide tilers publish a licence number starting with BLD, which you can check on the CBS licence register.

We could not confirm from CBS whether every tiling-only or waterproofing-only job falls under that licence, so do not treat a missing number as proof of anything either way. For a full bathroom renovation, ask who holds the licence for the whole job. If you are unsure, CBS licensing answers on 131 882.

Get a quote you can compare

Ask for the quote to be split into demolition and rubbish removal, preparation such as screeding and sheeting, waterproofing, tiling labour and materials. A single lump sum hides where the money goes and makes two quotes impossible to compare. None of the tilers on this list publish fixed prices, which is normal, so expect a site visit before a firm number.

Check who supplies the tiles. Some tilers supply them, others lay tiles you buy yourself. If you buy your own, order extra for cuts and breakages and keep a spare box from the same batch for future repairs. Also ask whether plumbing and electrical work is included or quoted by those trades separately.

Tile choice and warranty

Porcelain is denser than ceramic and absorbs less water, so it is the usual pick for floors and outdoor areas, while ceramic is fine for most walls and splashbacks. Natural stone looks great but needs sealing and more care. Large format tiles need a very flat floor, so ask whether preparation is included. For wet floors and outdoor areas ask about slip resistance before you fall for a polished finish.

Warranties vary a lot between tilers. On this list the published terms range from a 5-year guarantee to a written 10-year warranty on waterproofing. Get the warranty in writing, check whether it covers workmanship only or materials too. Keep your invoice and any waterproofing certificate with your house papers.

Frequently asked

What is AS 3740?

AS 3740:2021 Waterproofing of domestic wet areas is the Australian Standard that sets minimum requirements for the materials, design and installation of waterproofing in bathrooms, showers and laundries in homes. It is referenced by the National Construction Code. Ask your tiler to confirm their waterproofing meets it.

Do tilers need a licence in South Australia?

Anyone running a business that carries out or organises building work for others in SA needs a building work contractor's licence from CBS. Some tilers publish a BLD licence number that you can check on the CBS register. We could not confirm on CBS whether every tiling-only job is covered, so ask the tiler directly or call CBS licensing on 131 882.

How much does tiling cost in Adelaide?

None of the tilers on this list publish set rates, because the price depends on preparation, tile size, pattern and access. Ask for an itemised quote after a site visit, with demolition, waterproofing, labour and materials listed separately so you can compare like with like.

Can a leaking shower be fixed without retiling?

Sometimes. If the leak comes from failed grout or silicone, regrouting and resealing can fix it. If the membrane underneath has failed, the tiles usually have to come up. A specialist like SA Sealing & Tiling on this list can tell you which one you are dealing with.

What warranty should I expect from a tiler?

Published terms on this list include a 5-year guarantee, a 7-year warranty on tiling and a 10-year warranty on waterproofing. Ask for the warranty in writing and check whether it covers workmanship, materials or both.
