How to choose a plumber in Adelaide without getting stung
Most people hire a plumber while standing in water, which is the worst possible time to make a decision. Here is what to sort out beforehand.
Almost nobody chooses a plumber calmly. You choose one while the laundry floor is going dark at the edges. Maybe on the second morning of cold showers. Maybe after the hot water unit makes a noise you have never heard a hot water unit make. You ring the first three numbers that come up and you go with whoever answers.
That is how people end up paying four figures for a job that should have been three, so the useful work happens before the emergency. Twenty minutes now saves you the whole problem later.
Check the licence yourself. It takes two minutes
Plumbing, gas fitting and electrical work in South Australia are licensed trades, administered by Consumer and Business Services. There is a public register you can search. Searching it is free.
Ask for the licence number rather than the business name. Names get reused, trading names change and a licence sits with a specific person or entity. A plumber who is properly licensed will hand the number over without a pause. Hesitation at that question tells you everything you need to know.
A quote and an estimate are different documents
This trips up more people than anything else on this page. An estimate is a guess. A quote is a fixed price for a defined scope of work. If you agree to an estimate believing it was a quote, the final invoice can legitimately be much higher than the number you had in your head.
Get it in writing, with the scope written next to the number. Vague scope is where the money leaks out.

After hours is a different price. That is fair
A plumber who gets out of bed at 2am to stop your bathroom flooding is going to charge more than one who arrives on a Tuesday morning. That is not a rip-off, that is the job. What is worth knowing is where the boundaries sit, because they vary between businesses.
Ask when the after-hours rate starts, whether weekends count as after hours all day and whether public holidays are different again. If your problem can safely wait until Monday, waiting until Monday is often the cheapest decision available to you.
What genuinely cannot wait
- Any smell of gas. Turn the supply off at the meter, get outside, then ring. This is not a shop-around situation.
- Water actively entering the building where you cannot isolate it at the stop tap.
- Sewage backing up into the house.
- No water at all to the property, particularly with young kids or someone unwell at home.
Almost everything else, including a dead hot water unit, is genuinely survivable overnight. Uncomfortable, but survivable, with morning rates waiting.
Adelaide specifics worth knowing
A few things about this city change the answer.
- Reactive clay soil across a lot of Adelaide moves with the seasons. Recurring cracked pipes or blockages in the same spot are often a ground movement story rather than a one-off, so ask whether the plumber is fixing the symptom or the cause.
- Older inner suburbs still carry plenty of original galvanised and earthenware pipework. If your house is pre-war and the same drain keeps blocking, a camera inspection usually pays for itself rather than another round of clearing.
- Tree roots and sewer lines are a standing feud in the leafier eastern suburbs. If you have big established trees near the boundary, that is worth mentioning when you book so the right gear turns up.
- Hills and outer-fringe properties on tank or septic systems need someone who works on them regularly. Not every metro plumber does.
The questions worth asking on the phone

- 02Is that a quote or an estimate? Can I have it in writing?
- 03What is the call-out fee? Does it come off the job if I go ahead?
- 04Are you doing the work yourself or sending someone else? If someone else, are they licensed or an apprentice under supervision?
- 05Do you guarantee your workmanship? For how long? Is that in writing?
- 06If you open it up and it turns out to be bigger than expected, do you stop and call me before continuing?
That last one is the most valuable question on the list. The answer you want is an unhesitating yes.
