What to ask before you book a day spa
A ninety minute package rarely means ninety minutes of treatment. Here is how to read what you are actually buying.
Day spa pricing is written to sound generous. Packages get names like Escape or Indulgence, they list four or five things and they quote a total duration. Then you arrive. Somehow the whole thing is over sooner than the number on the website suggested.
Nothing dishonest has necessarily happened. You just bought something slightly different from what you thought you bought. These are the questions that close that gap.
Does the quoted time include changing and consultation?
This is the big one. A ninety minute package can mean ninety minutes of hands-on treatment. It can also mean ninety minutes from the moment you walk in until the moment you walk out, which includes getting changed, a consultation form, a foot soak, tea afterwards and the therapist writing notes between treatments.
Both are legitimate ways to sell it. They are very different experiences. Ask plainly: how many minutes of that are hands on?
Who is doing the treatment?
Worth asking without being weird about it. Some spas rotate whoever is available, some let you request a specific therapist and some run a training room at a lower price point, which is genuinely good value if you know that is what you are booking.
- Can I request a specific therapist? Does that cost more?
- For a couples booking, are both treatments in the same room at the same time? If not, how far apart?
- For anything clinical (peels, needling, injectables), what are the practitioner's qualifications? Who supervises?
- If I have a preference for a male or female therapist, can that be accommodated on the day?
That last one gets awkward if you leave it until you are already in a robe. Ask when you book.
Read the cancellation policy before you pay
Day spas hold a room and a person for you, so most of them have a real cancellation window. Plenty take a deposit or card details to hold the booking. Twenty four or forty eight hours is common.
The questions that matter: what is the window, what is the charge inside it and does illness change the answer. Get the answer before you hand over card details, not after.
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How much notice to cancel or move? | Determines how far ahead you can safely book around a busy calendar. |
| What is charged inside the window? | Ranges from nothing to the full treatment price. Worth knowing which. |
| Can I reschedule instead of cancelling? | Many spas will move a booking free where they would not refund it. |
| What happens if I am late? | Almost always your treatment is shortened rather than extended. Arriving fifteen minutes late usually costs you fifteen minutes. |
| Is a deposit refundable? | Often not. Better to know at the point of paying it. |
Gift vouchers: know the rules
Vouchers are a large part of how spas sell, particularly around Christmas and Mother's Day. Australian Consumer Law sets a minimum validity period for most gift cards and vouchers sold to consumers. It is considerably longer than the three months some places used to print.
The practical advice: check the expiry printed on the voucher. If it looks unusually short, ask about it. Also worth asking whether the voucher is for a dollar value or for a named treatment, because if a named treatment goes up in price before it is redeemed, those two behave differently.
- Is this a dollar value or a specific treatment?
- What is the expiry date? Is it printed on the voucher itself?
- Can it be used against a different treatment? Can it be topped up with cash for a more expensive one?
- Can it be used on a weekend? Are there blackout periods?
Tell them about your body before you arrive
Not because they will refuse you, but because it changes what they prepare. Pregnancy, recent surgery, high blood pressure, skin conditions, allergies to nut based oils, a shoulder that is currently a problem rather than historically a problem. All of it is normal. All of it is easier handled at booking than discovered at the last minute.
Pregnancy in particular. Many spas will happily treat you but need a specific room setup or a modified treatment. Some have a first trimester policy. Mention it when you book so the right therapist and room are allocated.
The best spa visit is the one where nothing needs to be sorted out after you have already taken your shoes off.

Frequently asked
Does a ninety minute spa package mean ninety minutes of treatment?+
Not always. Some venues quote hands-on treatment time, others quote the full visit including changing, consultation and rest time afterwards. Ask specifically how many minutes are hands on before you book.
How long are gift vouchers valid for in Australia?+
Australian Consumer Law sets a minimum validity period for most gift cards and vouchers sold to consumers. It is longer than the very short expiries some businesses once used. Check the date printed on the voucher, then query it with the business if it looks unusually short.
Can I book a day spa while pregnant?+
Usually yes, but tell them when you book rather than on arrival. Many spas offer pregnancy-appropriate treatments with a specific room setup. Some have policies around the first trimester, so it affects which therapist and room they allocate.
Is a package better value than a single treatment?+
It depends what you want. A package gives you variety across shorter segments. If your goal is a proper long massage, a single longer treatment at the same price usually delivers more of what you came for.
What happens if I arrive late?+
In almost every case your treatment is shortened rather than the following bookings pushed back. If you are running late, ring ahead, because some venues can shuffle things if they know early enough.
